The multicultural suburb of Kingsford is conveniently located only 7km from Sydney’s CBD and 3.5km from the beach. It was once known as South Kensington, but was renamed to honour Charles Kingsford Smith – the famous aviator. A tribute to the aviator can be found in the form of several mosaics in the suburb, and a Trans Pacific Mural in Gardeners Lane.
Kingsford is a mainly residential area, situated directly south of the University of New South Wales. There’s also a large Australian Army depot just east of Kingsford.
Because of its close proximity to UNSW, many of Kingsford’s residents are students living in high density apartment blocks. For this same reason you will find a large number of cafe’s restaurants and takeaways offering excellent value in a whole range of cuisines, reflecting Kingsford’s status as a multicultural hub.
To the south you’ll predominantly find one and two storey single dwellings, many constructed during the boom housing period in the 1950’s and 60’s.

You may sometimes hear Kingsford referred to as “nine-ways”, and this is due to a large roundabout in the centre of Kingsford. Connecting a public transport system to nine possible destinations via a large number of bus services, it’s an incredibly well serviced area. Kingsford is also just minutes from the famous Coogee and Maroubra beaches.
The culture of Kingsford is lively, thanks to its predominantly young suburb. You can enjoy the carnival atmosphere at the Randwick Racecourse, or work on your swing at the Australian Golf Club – both of which are a stone’s throw away. Centennial Park is also nearby, offering jogging, walking, cycling and roller blade tracks, horseriding, playing fields, and many lush picnic spots.
There are a number of schools in the suburb and surrounding areas, including St Michael’s Convent School, St Spyridon College, Brigidine College at Randwick and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Kensington.
